Bestmed Medical Scheme

8 November 2013

Dear Member,

Bestmed has, over the past two years, established several preferred and designated service provider networks with provider groups with the objective of making sustainable, high-quality healthcare services available to our members at affordable premiums. By now, you are probably familiar with the Bestmed General Practitioners, Pharmacy and Oncology Networks. The latest addition is the Bestmed Specialist Network. The network providers have committed to charging Scheme tariffs for consultations and other medical services as well as lower dispensing fees and we anticipate that they will, therefore, expect minimal or no co-payments from you.

Bestmed General Practitioners Network

The Bestmed General Practitioners (GP) Preferred Provider (PP) Network has functioned well since January 2013 and has grown to over 2 131 contracted GPs. An updated list of contracted GPs is available on our website. If your GP is not listed, he or she may contact Bestmed and we will send a copy of the contract to the practice.

You may, of course, use GPs that have not contracted with Bestmed, but please note that in doing so you may be charged co-payments, to the detriment of your own funds or the funds in your medical savings account if applicable.

Our contact details are: Tel: 012 818 9080, E-mail: providers@bestmed.co.za

Bestmed Pharmacy Network

The Bestmed Pharmacy Preferred Provider (PP) Network has been in place since February 2013. An updated list of contracted pharmacies is available on our website. These pharmacies have committed to providing cost-effective medicines at very competitive dispensing fees. Between 20% on the first R100 or capped at R20 on the lower side, and 28% on the first R100 or capped at R28 on the higher side per medicine dispensed. In addition, they have also committed to not charging co-payments over and above their contracted rates. Please support these pharmacies and their courier services: Dis-Chem with Courier PLS, MediRite (in Checkers and Shoprite stores), Pick ‘n Pay, Script Savers, Optipharm, Pharmacy Direct and S Buys with Courier Script-Wise.

You may, of course, use pharmacies that have not contracted with Bestmed, but please note that in doing so you may be charged co-payments, to the detriment of your own funds or the funds in your medical savings account if applicable.

Bestmed Oncology Network

The Bestmed Oncology Designated Service Provider (DSP) Network in partnership with ICON was implemented as from April 2013. Their internationally accepted protocols and oncology services are designed to serve our members in the best possible way. An updated list of contracted oncologists is available on our website. ICON is the designated service provider for all newly registered oncology patients for all Bestmed’s options except Pace 3 and Pace 4 which is dealt with by the South African Oncology Consortium (SAOC). Members who are currently registered for oncology will not experience any changes.

Contact details for registration, authorisation of the treatment, claims and queries are:

Bestmed Specialist Network

The Bestmed Specialist Designated Service Provider (DSP) Network was recently established and will be implemented as from 1 January 2014. The main objective of the network is to offer high-quality specialist healthcare services at Scheme tariffs with minimal or no co-payments, especially the diseases listed as Prescribed Minimum Benefits (PMBs) which schemes are obliged to pay at cost. These diseases are listed as 200+ conditions that include emergencies, almost all the cancers as well as some chronic conditions.

Members are encouraged to use the services of specialists in the Bestmed Specialist DSP Network. An updated list of contracted specialists will be available on our website as from 1 Jan 2014. It will remain your choice which specialist you wish to use, but please note that if you opt for a specialist who is not part of our network (as is your right), you may be expected to make a co-payment to the out-of-network specialist. Alternatively, you may also negotiate with the out-of-network specialist to charge Scheme tariff. In our Bestmed Specialist DSP Network, we have agreed with the service providers not to charge any co-payments or to apply split billing.

Regarding hospital utilisation, you have freedom of choice and may generally use any private hospital for treatment (except for Pulse 1 and 2 members, who are required to use Netcare as their Hospital DSP).

Contact details for treatment, claims and queries are:

We trust you will find this useful. If, however, you need more information, or support from our Client Relations Team, please do not hesitate to contact us. Your wellbeing, as a valued client of the Scheme, is important to all of us at Bestmed.

With kind regards
