Emergency Assistance and Authorisation of Expenses
Europ Assistance South Africa has been appointed to provide 24-hour emergency assistance. If you are
in need of assistance please contact Europ Assistance SA on: +27 11 991 8914. If you are travelling
abroad you may also contact the international operator of the country you are visiting and request to
be connected to Europ Assistance SA on reverse call charges.
Terms and Conditions
This document provides you with a summary of the terms, conditions and exclusions of the
international medical extension, together with information that will help you in the event of an
emergency. Please refer to the Bonitas International Travel Benefit product wording for terms,
conditions and exclusions of cover.
Who is covered
We will provide the services and benefits to members of Bonitas and their beneficiaries, who reside in
South Africa (i.e. primary residence in South Africa) and have not spent more than 6 months abroad
in the same year.
Important points to keep in mind
• Trip Limits: Trips must commence and end in South Africa and a return ticket must have been
booked prior to departure. Cover is valid when travelling on an international journey, outside the
borders of South Africa, commencing when you pass through passport control from South Africa
and ending when you pass back through passport control into South Africa.
• Applying for a Schengen Visa: Please declare your travel dates and countries you intend to visit
to Europ Assistance SA (at least 2 days prior to your visa application date) on 0861 553 554, in
order for them to issue a Medical Cover confirmation letter to apply for a Schengen Visa.

Summary of what is covered
• Emergency medical cover is limited to R5,000,000 per beneficiary and R10,000,000 per family.
• The benefits will be available for the first ninety (90) days of your journey or until your return to
South Africa, whichever occurs first.
• Medical & Related Expenses:
– The immediate treatment of an unforeseen medical emergency. Included are the following
fees incurred in a foreign country: Medical Practitioner’s fees, hospital expenses, in-patient and
out-patient treatment and charges for medical transportation.
– If the medical condition necessitates repatriation and you are fit to travel, Europ Assistance SA
will return you to South Africa. If you are fit to travel and can return but choose not to, all
expenses incurred after that date will be for your own account.
• Emergency Dental Treatment up to R2,000 for the immediate relief of pain or discomfort.

Summary of specific claims we do not cover
• Adventure Sports & Activities:
The benefit contains restrictions regarding the participation in sports. Please note that the policy
does not cover search and rescue operations, and sports that include the use of a parachute.
• Pregnancy:
There is no cover for any claim relating to pregnancy or childbirth should medical complications
or emergencies arise after the 24th (twenty fourth) week of pregnancy. There is no cover for the
baby if he or she is born outside the borders of South Africa.
• Situations where a member is aware of a reason which should give rise to any claim.
• Situations where a member is travelling contrary to medical advice, or with the intention of
obtaining medical
treatment, or where a terminal prognosis has been given.
• Emergency treatment conditions, and complications thereof, for which treatment or medical
advice was received at any time during the thirty day period immediately preceding the date of
departure from South Africa.
Claim notification requirements
• Authorisation of expenses:
In the event of a medical emergency you MUST contact Europ Assistance SA on
+27 11 991 8914 before incurring expenses in excess of R5,000.
• Inpatient Treatment:
Europ Assistance SA will validate your membership and liaise with your treating doctor overseas to
ensure the treatment is appropriate. Upon authorisation of the treatment, Europ Assistance SA will
send a payment guarantee to the hospital directly. In case of illness, Europ Assistance SA may
also request a medical history from your local regular treating doctor.
• Out-of-hospital medical expenses: You are liable for the first R1,000 (or equivalent in the local
currency) for out-of-hospital medical emergency claims incurred per trip (claims excess). The
R1,000 applies to each person, on each journey, per event. If you receive outpatient treatment
where the expense is less than R5,000 you should pay the hospital or clinic and claim back your
medical expenses on your return home.
• Reimbursement of expenses upon your return to South Africa: You may obtain a claim form from
Europ Assistance SA. You must notify Europ Assistance SA within thirty (30) days and provide them
as soon as is reasonably possible with:
– written details of the event;
– proof of expenses, or details of any communication received in connection with a claim.
